Guwahati: Guards at Kaziranga National Park killed a rhino poacher inside the protected area in the wee hours of Saturday.

Kaziranga divisional forest officer S K Seal Sarma said a gang of poachers had been trying to sneak inside the park for the last couple of days. "We had received intelligence about the poachers. Accordingly, we laid traps on all the possible entry routes. Around 2.30 am, there was an encounter with the gang which had at least four poachers. Our staff managed to kill one of them," Seal Sarma said.

The slain poacher is yet to be identified. The encounter took place in the Kanchanjuri area under the park's Burapahar forest range. One .303 rifle and live ammunition have been recovered from the encounter spot. "We have been on high alert since poachers try and sneak into the park during the festive season," another park official said.

The official added, "We are happy at being able to foil the poachers' attempts."

Last month, Union minister of state for environment and forest Prakash Javadekar had said a Centre-funded special rhino protection force would be raised to curb poaching in the state.
