BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Environmental Society in collaboration with Indian Science Congress, Bhubaneswar Chapter, organised a workshop on ‘Wildlife and Climate Change’ here on Monday.

Discussions on an array of topics related to shrinkage and degradation of natural habitats and species facing a threat of extinction were conducted during the event. The participants at the workshop raised concerns over man-elephant clashes which lead to casualties on both sides.

Elephants have been the victims of industrialisation, mining, electrocution, railway accidents and poaching. The diminishing forest cover and fragmentation of natural habitats have left the remaining 28,000 elephants in the country vulnerable. The forum demanded that the 14 elephant corridors in the State, which have already been identified, must be established at the earliest. The workshop was chaired by Satyananda Acharya, former Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University and Bhagirathi Behera, Director of Environment, Government of India was the chief speaker at the workshop.
