Puducherry to host biodiversity film festival

PUDUCHERRY: New Delhi-based NGO Centre for Media Studies (CMS), in association with the Union and Puducherry governments, will conduct an environment and wildlife film festival here from October 7 to 12.

Supported by the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change, Puducherry departments of the forest and wildlife and science, technology and environment and Puducherry pollution control committee, the film festival will showcase best of green films besides holding a series of events that include a workshop on filmmaking, panel discussion, nature trail, cleaning of beach, slogan writing competition and green marathon on biodiversity theme.

The festival will be held at 16 venues that include Pondicherry University, Pondicherry Engineering College, police community hall, multimedia centre and Sri Aurobindo auditorium in Auroville, Kendriya Vidyalaya 1 and 2 and Lycee Francais de Pondichery among others.

The festival aims at enlightening all sections of people on the significance of conserving biodiversity and living in harmony with nature.

Electricity minister T Thiagarajan, who holds the portfolio of forest, science, technology and environment, will formally inaugurate the festival in the presence of CMS chairman N Bhaskara Rao, joint secretary (Union ministry of environment and forest) Maninder Singh, Puducherry secretary (science, technology and environment) V Candavelou and others at Anandha Inn convention centre at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The organizers will honour Maraimalai Adigal government HSS lecturer S Govindan, scholar R Rajamanikam and Stanford HSS student C Oviya with green ambassador titles for their contribution in the conservation of biodiversity during the inaugural function.

A short film, "Turtles in a Soup" (English and Hindi) by Kalpana Subramanian will be screened during the inaugural function. The 12-minute film, which received the jury special mention award in wildlife conservation category of CMS film festival, focuses on the role of freshwater turtles in keeping the water bodies free of pollution.

The six-day festival will screen 24 Indian and international films by some of the finest environment and wildlife filmmakers.
