HP to host meet on climate change

As the rising temperature and changing weather pattern stoke concerns among the international community, the experts from world over will meet at historical Chamba town of the hill- state to discuss the challenges of universal phenomenon of climate change, next month.

The three- day international conference titled ‘Development, Biodiversity and Climate Change: Issues and Challenges’ is being hosted by the department of sociology, the Government Post- Graduate College, Chamba.

Also known as Chamba Climate Meet- 2014, the conference will be held in collaboration with the Asia Climate Education Centre, Jeju, South Korea, International Sociological Association, Madrid (Spain), Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (INCU) and National Centre for Good Governance, and the department of personnel and training of the central government.

“It is an attempt to provide a forum for academic exchange of knowledge and skill,” said Dr Mohinder Salariya, associate professor, environmental sociology, at the host institute and organising secretary of the conference. “Over 150 delegates will attend the conference that will be held from October 3 to 5,” he added. “It would be a platform for professors, scientists, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, policy executors, research scholars and exhibitors working in different fields to discuss issues and challenges related to the development biodiversity and climate change, particularly focusing on human dimensions of development in Himalayan region,” he added.

Elaborating on the conference, Dr Salariya said that to enhance understanding of the relationship between development, biodiversity and climate change and to document the understanding of international scholars on its themes and sub- themes were the prime objectives.

An appropriate model highlighting socio-human dimensions of development, biodiversity and climate change, Dr Salariya said, may be useful for the government.
