BHOPAL: A day after mysterious death of a tigress in Bandhavgarh National Reserve (BNP), two of its cubs were also found dead on Thursday evening. However, one of the cubs was found alive hiding behind bamboo bush.

Carcasses of the two cubs, who were around three months old, were found at a distance of 50 meters from each other near Charanganga canal where tigress was found dead on Wednesday.

Officials claim that the cubs were killed by a male tiger. "Tigress must have taken on the tiger to save the cubs, but in vain. It either succumbed to the injuries or got drowned after it was attacked," said an officer.

With these two cubs, the state has lost four of its big cats in the last 24 hours including a tigress at Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR). In all, BNP has lost six tigers in the last six months.

In May, a tigress was killed by poachers using an electric trap at the buffer zone of BNP. Carcass of adult tigress BT2 was found near Khitoli range by patrolling squad. Its GPS radio collar, nail, teeth and whiskers were missing. This tigress was electrocuted by a trap laid through an 11 KV line by poachers near Barruah nullah, said sources.

Earlier, three tigers were killed by poachers in the same area forcing the state government to remove PK Shukla from the post of chief wildlife warden of state. The last tiger poaching incident was reported in Jugia village near Vijayraghogarh forest range (compartment No 448- Amadi beat) in December 2012.
