Correspondent :
District-level competitions in schools highlighting the importance of conservation of biodiversity will be conducted as part of the ‘‘Biodiversity Congress for Children’’ being organised by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) with the objective of creating conservation awareness among schoolchildren.

The competitions are being organised here to select students to participate in the State-level biodiversity congress. Projects selected from students in upper primary, high school, and higher secondary levels will be evaluated for the State-level selection of projects to be presented at the congress, a press release here said.

District-level painting and essay competitions on biodiversity-related themes will also be held at the Science Park here on November 1, the release said.

The projects to be submitted by the student participants are categorised under three themes based on the classes they are studying in. For the participants in the upper primary segment, the theme is ‘land and river.’ The projects under this theme should be a study showing how rivers and other water bodies are connected to the culture of the land and the changes these water resources have undergone.

‘Kerala and monsoon’ is the theme for high school students. The participants in this category should present a study on the impact of climate changes on monsoon patterns and on the land. The participants in the higher secondary category should present the project on ‘Urbanisation and water bodies’ showing the changes on water bodies impacted by urbanisation, the release said.

The projects of students should reach the office of the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) here on or before October 20. An organising committee with DDE Dineshan Madathil as chairman and KSBB district coordinator Rajashekharan Nair as convener has been constituted to hold the programme.
