Emissions of pollutants from factories affecting environment in Guwahati Rush hour traffic is slowing to a crawl leading to higher oil consumption and emissions that pollute the atmosphere.

GUWAHATI: The Assam State organising council of the Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha (BJVJ) on Saturday urged the Government to make the Pollution Control Board, Assam, an autonomous body for effective checking of environmental pollution of Guwahati city.

Expressing concern over the prevailing environmental status of the city, State president of BJVJ A.K. Goswami and environmental scientist K.G. Bhattacharjee suggested that the pollution control board be given more teeth so that it could act against erring industrial units or anyone who violated the pollution control norms.

Pollution from traffic

They pointed out that congestion, noise, traffic jams and air pollution had become chronic in the city during the last few years. The traffic volume of the city had increased several times. It was estimated that on an average 75,000 vehicles ply on the city's roads.

With growing traffic congestion, rush hour traffic is slowing to a crawl leading to a state of serious air pollution which, in turn, leads to higher oil consumption and emissions and thus polluting the atmosphere.
