PANCHKULA: The lack of manpower and proper infrastructure coupled with pressure from the influential people have made keeping track of poachers a difficult task for the district wildlife department here.

The department, however, challaned around 16 persons for poaching last year, but failed to nail the big sharks.

"Even if we have clues, we do not have the required infrastructure to lay trap. Sometimes we face non-cooperation from the police,"a district wildlife official said. Most of those challaned were from hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh and Morni. Normally, animals were killed for skins, he added.

In November last year, Gypsy-borne youths hailing from some influential family in Punjab made a foiled attempt of poaching in Asrewali forest reserves. They reportedly opened fire on the wildlife department staff and managed to escape.

"We have lodged a complaint at Ramgarh police post. But it has not gone beyond the daily diary report (DDR),"the official said.
