Call for preserving the watershed areas in order to save Mother Earth from the effects of Climate Change was the highlight of the World Environment Day in Nagaland today.

The day was being observed under the theme 'Small Islands and Climate Change' throughout the state with several organizations carrying out social work, planting tree saplings and holding awareness seminar on the impact of Climate Change.

"The occasion is not just for observation but to be serious and act positively as the damage caused by human on the Earth is already too much," said Limatemjen, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Kohima Science College Jotsoma, while speaking at a seminar organised by the district administration here.

He said, "We the present generation owe much to the future generation" towards protecting the earth as the impact of man-made disasters can be felt in various forms including melting of the glaciers, increasing sea level, non availability of potable water and climate change.

He stressed the need of protecting and preserving the watershed areas, afforestation and spreading awareness to fight Climate Change.

He expressed fear that failure to preserve the nature and conservation of water would lead to circumstances making water costlier in the future.

Social activist Kezhokhoto Savi appealed to all the citizens of Nagaland and said, "Let us wake up ... The time has come for us to develop a sense of urgent need to protect our environment as well as a sense of hope for its future as plenty of damage has been done to our land and more is inflicted every day.
