After WHO rap, L-G forms panel to look into city’s air pollution

Correspondent :
After the 2014 version of the Ambient Air Pollution (AAP) Database released by WHO declared Delhi to have the worst air quality in any city of the world, Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung constituted a high powered committee on Tuesday to look into Delhi’s pollution levels.

This committee will specifically look into two issues - vehicular air pollution in Delhi and pollution levels in the Yamuna due to dumping of industrial waste and sewer into the river. The Lt-Governor has asked the committee to formulate long-term and short-term measures to tackle pollution and to submit the recommendations in a month.

“We cannot allow for pollution to grow unchecked. It is our moral responsibility to provide a healthy environment to our citizens. If we have to ensure health of our cities, we will have to take stern steps against pollution and polluting units,” Jung said.

The high powered committee will be chaired by the Chief Secretary and will have Special CP (Traffic), Delhi Police; Secretary (Environment); Commissioner (Transport) and Additional Secretary (DPCC) as its members.

The move comes after the Lt-Governor had a meeting with the Chief Secretary and other senior officers of the Delhi government on May 9 over Delhi’s air pollution.
