NAGPUR: On Monday, while a city court extended forest custody remand (FCR) of two tiger skin traders, another organized poacher Arkas, wanted in killing of tiger and sloth bear in Masondi in Melghat in May, was nabbed in joint raids by Pune and Melghat officials on Monday night. The tally of total number of poachers arrested so far has gone up to 19.

"The raids were conducted in three Nashik, Mumbai-Pune highway and Dehu Road," said a senior forest official.

Arkas is alleged to have used a spear to kill the tiger. The operation to nab more poachers was going on up to the time of the report.

Suraj Pal and Naresh Lala were produced in the court of JMFC RB Raja who extended their FCR up to October 30. Also, lack of coordination among forest officials led to arrested poacher Saranki go out of their hand.

Special counsel for forest department Kartik Shukul told the court that Pal is an old hand in the trade and had procured two leopard skins from Gaddigodam (Nagpur) in 1975. However, he is being arrested for the first time.

The Umred court rejected Pench forest officials' demand to extend FCR of poacher Saranki as there was no recovery of material. Pench had registered a separate offence in poaching of a tiger in Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

One offence has already been registered in the same case. Now, PCCF (wildlife) Sarjan Bhagat has taken a decision to merge the two offences.

Saranki, an aide of dreaded poacher Ajit now lodged in central jail, was arrested in Umariya in MP for his involvement in tiger poaching in Umred-Karhandla.

On October 16, during interrogation, Saranki had confessed that he along with Ajit, Saka, Khutya, Sheru and Fullal had killed a tiger in November 2012 near Khumari, 7km from Mansar, but officials did not register an offence. The spot is hardly 900 metres from NH7 on the Mansar-Jabalpur Road.

On October 26, in another offence, Saranki was taken to Khumari for a probe. He showed the spot, which falls in compartment number 298 in Ramtek forest range, where the tiger was killed. Saranki was in custody till October 28, but no offence was registered. Saranki is being handed over to Umariya police as he was brought on transit warrant. He may be released soon.
