DALTONGANJ: A tigress along with her two cubs were spotted at a hillock (name withheld to protect the species from poaching, etc) on the border of the territorial division of Latehar and Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR).

Sources said, "The tigress and her cubs are healthy. Only a few weeks ago the bodies of a pregnant cow and a calf were recovered from here. The two bore the marks of assault by a tigress. The cattle belonged to Moghul Oraon."

Ranger Rajinder Shukla of Garu East Range on Wednesday confirmed the presence of the tigress. He said, "There is no point in doubting Oraon who claimed to have seen a tigress with her two cubs."

Explaining his point, he added, "Oraon has given a graphic description as to how the three feasted on their prey. A male tiger also seems to have been sighted in this border area, with a tribal woman swearing to have seen one 10 days ago when she was out with her husband to pluck soft bamboo. She was sitting on a rock with her baby in her lap when the tiger crossed her from a close distance."

If all reports are taken into account, four tigers have been spotted in this bordering range - a male, one female and two cubs. Field director of Project Tiger S E H Kazmi said, "The ranger had apprised him of villagers having spotted the tigers. But they should'nt have taken such a long time to detect the tigers as this reflected that monitoring of wildlife was not up to the mark."

The ranger said, "As the cow was preyed upon in the non-tiger reserve area, Oraon is entitled to receive his compensation from the territorial forest division of Latehar." He added that he has been asked to file a representation for the payment of compensation for this with PTR as well. The tiger reserve officials are trying to fix the camera trap in the locality to track the movements of the male tiger, female tiger and her two cubs.
