The aim of the workshop is to develop interdisciplinary synergy between climate change-cryospheric science-water resources and social sciences among active researchers and budding research scholars for developing appropriate adoptive strategies to the climate change response in the Ladakh region, as per the workshop brochure.

The workshop will be open to final year postgraduate students, research scholars and young scientists of various disciplines. Revanth, a final year student LLM at NALSAR University is the only one from the state from among 30 selected candidates.

Revanth submitted his previous experience, contribution to environmental issues and research work related to water in order to get selected for the workshop, apart from other aspects. “I am looking forward to understand the livelihood changes in the region of Leh along with the social impact of tourism on the residents of the region and possible policy changes”, said Revanth and added that he is looking forward to meet scientists who will attend the workshop.

The workshop whose main focus will be on climate change impact on water resources, changing habitat and livelihood patterns of the people of Ladakh’s cold arid areas, will start with two-day introductory deliberations, followed by a five-day fieldwork which includes a one day visit to the NIH glacier research station near Khardung La, as per a workshop brochure.

Speaking about water problems in the region, Revanth says, “The region is experiencing problems related to water because of increased tourism, which became a source of money for them. I will try to find out how to balance tourism and strategies to control the usage of water”.

“Human beings consider themselves above nature though they are part of it because they developed language as means of communication”, says Revanth. “Means of communication should be used for the betterment of nature”, opined Revanth.
