GUWAHATI, April 28 – Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) members today held a demonstration on the southern bank of the Dighalipukhuri here in protest against poaching of rhinos. They also demanded removal of Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain for his failure to bring to an end the disturbing trend of rhino poaching.

The organisation also sent a memorandum to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) on the issue. In the memorandum, it called for urgent steps to stop poaching of rhinos immediately.

For the purpose, the people of the State and particularly those living in the Kaziranga neighbourhood, should be consulted urgently, adequate number of forest guards should be appointed immediately and they should be properly trained and provided with the best of the facilities and sophisticated weapons.

The Government and the Forest Department must lobby against the international agencies, which try to procure rhino horns from Assam. Besides, the KMSS said in its memorandum, best scientific practices be adopted and eminent scientists of the country and abroad should be consulted to find out the ways and means to overcome the ecological challenges facing the Kaziranga National Park and its rhino population, taking into confidence the people of its neighbourhood.
