JORHAT: Over 100 activists of All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) on Thursday launched a 50-hour hunger strike at Kaziranga National Park in protest against the state government's move to embark on a pilot project of de-horning rhinos in the state. Aasu said dehorning is not the solution to the poaching menace and the project must be aborted.

Aasu started the protest in front of the park's main gate at Kohora Chariali from 10 am on Thursday. It will continue till 12 pm on April 5.

"Our programme will continue for 50 hours. We demand that the government cancel its project of trimming rhino horns at the earliest. We will never allow the government to take such measures. We believe dehorning is not the solution to this problem," said Aasu central executive member Manuara Hussain.

He said the government has failed to curb rhino poaching in the park. "The government has failed to take required steps to stop poaching. Moreover, forest officials in the park are neither skilled nor well equipped to face poachers who are armed with sophisticated rifles. The government should focus on arming the forest guards," he added.

Facing flak for its failure to check rhino poaching, the state government has decided to launch the pilot project. The government has also sought public opinion on this issue. At least 11 rhinos have been killed by poachers in Kaziranga National Park this year.
