GUWAHATI, April 1 – Unabated killing of rhinos in Assam particularly in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) has become a major election issue for the opposition parties. Though the Congress is trying to claim that steps are being initiated to prevent poaching of rhinos, the opposition parties are of the view that the Congress led Government totally failed to protect the rhinos and the Government lacks political will to do so.

The Assam Tribune tried to get the views of the political parties on the issue and AGP working president Atul Bora went a step further and alleged that the Government is involved in poaching of rhinos. He said that such unabated killing of rhinos is unprecedented in Assam and the Government totally failed to take effective steps in this regard. He said that such unabated killing of rhinos in the state is not possible without the involvement of the Government.

General Secretary of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Santanu Bharali said that every morning the people of Assam get up with the unfortunate news of killing of another rhino. He said that the Government lacks clear cut policy to deal with the problem and interestingly, the Congress is silent on the issue. He alleged that if the Congress cannot give protection to the rhinos in the national parks and sanctuaries, one cannot expect the Government led by the party to give protection to the life and property of the people. If the BJP comes to power at the Centre, effective steps would be taken to deal with the problem, he asserted.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) said that the Government lacks clear policy to deal with rhino poaching. AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam the Assam Government does not have a policy for protection of wild life and even the forests of the State.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Apurba Bhattacharya tried to defend his party and claimed that the Congress is concerned about the killing of rhinos and all possible steps are being taken to check poaching. However, he admitted that Government might not have been able to provide modern weapons to all the forest guards to deal with the heavily armed poachers.
