8 poachers held in KNP, 2 rhino horns seized

DERGAON, Dec 22 – Forest personnel of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) today apprehended eight persons and recovered two rhino horns along with a rhino hide. According to information, after killing of one rhino at the park on December 17 night, the park authority tightened the vigilance. As a part of the anti-poaching drive, the park authorities killed three poachers in the last five days.

Following a special drive against the poachers, eight of them were nabbed and rhino horn of 800 gms was recovered from a house in Chahala Obhota Chapori near the park. On the other hand the Forest personnel also seized a rhino horn of weight 1 kg from a person Timo Beel just near the Bokakhat town. They also recovered a rhino hide of weight 100 gm. The horn was recovered when the poachers tried to sell it.

The DFO, wild life Utpal Bora talking to The Assam Tribune said that the villagers of the nearby areas have helped the authorities nab the poachers. A total of seven rhinos were killed in Kaziranga in this year. Among them, four rhinos were killed by poachers at Agaratali range while two were killed at Bagari and one at Burhapahar.

The DFO disclosed that the forest guards face an uphill task to track down the poachers as there are only 500 guards in the 840 sq km Park.
