National shooter held for killing blackbuck

BHOPAL: Bhopal Rifle Club imposed a life ban on national shooter Saad Khan and his accomplice Mohammad Owais a day after they were arrested from a village in Sehore district for poaching a peacock and a blackbuck. Rifle club runs the affairs of amateur shooting in Madhya Pradesh.

Khan and Owais were accompanied by Nishad Khan. All three accused were remanded to two-day police custody on Wednesday.

Confirming the ban, director of Bhopal Rifle Club, Aruneshwar Singhdeo told TOI, "State body cannot entertain such people. Our constitution is very clear as anyone involved in criminal activity cannot continue with the club."

He said a decision to lift the ban would be taken by the executive committee of the club as and when the court clears them. A letter in this regard has already been sent to additional district magistrate, he said.

Khan's membership no L-81 and Owais's membership no A-49 have been deleted from members list of the club.

They were caught by the people at Kathpon village. Villagers were stopping vehicles for collecting donations for Holi celebrations when they stopped Khan's jeep and a villager spotted a rifle and later found the carcass of a blackbuck and a peacock. Angry villagers dragged the three out and beat them up.

Imported .22 and 270 caliber rifles, several cartridges and a binocular were confiscated from their jeep besides skinned peacock and a blackbuck. All have been booked under provisions of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Arms Act.
