MADURAI: A group of environmental activists in and around Madurai have come together to urge political parties to reveal their stand on global warming. A seminar was organised in the city on Sunday by People Movement to Save the Earth, a Madurai-based organisation, to create awareness on global warming. The participants urged political parties to address the issue of climate change, which needs immediate attention.

"Political parties should reveal their stand on global warming. They must list out measures to curb it in their election manifesto," said Y David, founder of the organisation. He flayed the decisions of the government, which lead to the global warming.

"A whopping 30 % of the global warming gases are emerging out of the agricultural fields due to the increased usage of artificial pesticides and fertilisers. Foods have become poison due to such artificial substances. Farmers should turn to organic farming before it becomes too late," he said.

The activists questioned the awareness of political parities about the consequences of the earth's increasing temperature. "Most of the natural disasters are man-made. Green house effect is a man-made disaster and it has been proved by scientists around the world. The 0.8 Celsius rise in heat is causing several disasters. Eminent scientists have estimated that in another 20-30 years the temperature would increase by 2 Celsius. By the time everything would have gone to an irreversible situation. We should act before it," he warned.
