JORHAT: Barely a week after poachers killed an adult female rhino at Kaziranga National Park, another rhino was killed by poachers in the park's Agoratoli forest range on Saturday. Poachers shot dead the pachyderm and chopped off its horn before forest staff reached the spot.

This is the fourth rhino killed by poachers in the park this year so far. On January 25, an adult female rhino was shot dead in the park's Burapahar forest range. Two other rhinos were killed in the Panpur Reserve Forest under sixth addition of the park on January 9 and 18 respectively.

Confirming the incident, park director MK Yadav said some militants were behind the attack. "They killed the rhino with sophisticated weapons and cut off its horn within a very short time. Our staff in the nearby Muamari anti-poaching camp heard gunshots and launched an operation. But they fled the spot within 10 minutes. We believe some militants were involved and used AK-47 rifles in the attack," he said.

The park director added that considering the rise in rhino killing incidents in Kaziranga, some new strategies have been taken up by the park authorities to check poaching. "We have taken up various new projects to prevent rhino poaching here. We are planning to set up at least eight towers for round-the-clock surveillance in the park with electronic eye system.

"Projects like night vision, perimeter security and bulletproof jackets for forest guards are underway and the government has given the required approval on it. So, we believe that poaching in the park will be controlled in the next two to three months after proper implementation of all these projects," he said.
