3 units in Tirupur asked to close for causing pollution

The Hindu , Tuesday, March 04, 2014
Correspondent :
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on Monday ordered closure of two oil extraction units, and one blue metal stone crushing unit in the district for causing air pollution.

The board had directed the Tangedco to immediately disconnect the power supply to the three units.

The board’s District Environmental Engineer (Tirupur South) A. Shanmugam told The Hindu that the two units that extract oil from cashew nut shells were located near Dharapuram, and the blue metal unit near Mulanur.

Mr. Shanmugam said that the two oil extraction units were found operating in a thickly populated residential area without obtaining any requisite permission.

The blue metal stone crushing unit, though had an operational license, was not complying with the guidelines stipulated by the board. This was resulting in air pollution.

Mr. Shanmugam said that actions were taken against the three units under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
