GAIL (India) inaugurated an Electro Magnetic Display (EMD) unit in the heart of Kochi on Wednesday. It was set up at a cost of Rs 15 lakh to create awareness about the pollution levels and other weather parameters.

Proshanto Banerjee, chairman and managing director, GAIL (India) Limited, inaugurated the facility at the Marine Drive in the city.

The EMD displays, apart from time, temperature and humidity, the presence of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Oxides of Sulphur and Nitrogen and Carbon Monoxide in the air.

Mr Banerjee also inaugurated the GAIL-sponsored Air Pollution Research and Disease Diagnostic Centre (APRDC) at the General Hospital in the evening.

With the Rs 20 lakh APRDC becoming functional, the general hospital has acquired the latest system for biochemical lung function testing in the form of breath Condensate (ecoscreen) and a system for analysis of Hydrogen Peroxide in exhaled breath which is a maker for inflammation in lungs.

Mr Banerjee said the APRDC here was the twelfth amongst the 23 such centres being sponsored by GAIL in 23 cities across the country.

This is a new concept in the area of health care to provide diagnostic facilities and treatment to the poorer section of the society and will facilitate baseline investigations for diagnosis.

APM Mohammed Hanish, Ernakulam District Collector and KV Thomas, MLA. Also spoke on the occasion.
