Manipal University gets greener in UI global ranking

MANGALORE: Manipal University has improved its position in the Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University by eight places.

In the latest ranking released on January 17, Manipal University ranked 27th globally in the suburban category while retaining its top position in the country, yet again.

Environment executive Manipal University Derrick Ian Joshua said the university continues to strive towards more eco-friendly practices leading to a harmonious relationship with planet earth.

This year, 301 universities from 61 countries took part in the ranking survey, which saw a much better participation than last year's 215 universities from 49 countries. University of California, US was ranked first, followed by University of Bath (UK) in the second position, Universiti Putra, Malaysia and Bangor University, UK were in the third and fourth positions and Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain was fifth.

Apart from the United States, Japan, United Kingdom and other European countries that have participated, universities from Slovenia, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey Iran, Jordan, Panama and Pakistan took part, including many new entrants.

The ranking is done by UI which compares the efforts of universities towards campus sustainability and environment friendly management. The results are computed from information provided by universities online and Manipal University participated in the Suburban Category for the second year. The informations are organized under six main categories. These categories and their weightings are: Setting and Infrastucture (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste management (18%), Water usage (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education (18%).
