New Delhi: Three Indian cities—Indore, Surat and Gorakhpur—are ready to roll out plans to deal with climate change.

They were among 10 Asian cities chosen by the US Rockefeller Foundation to devise plans aimed at making them resilient to the impact of climate change.

With projects funded by the foundation, the three cities are ready with their plans which will they now start implementing, Ashvin Dayal, managing director (Asia), Rockefeller Foundation, said on Tuesday, adding: “We are trying to see how climate change will affect cities, especially in this era of urbanisation.”

Dayal said the foundation helped the cities initially to devise a plan and that local bodies were now trying to implement these plans by putting in their own money.

The Rockefeller Foundation, along with Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADE), a research institute and Taru, a consulting company, have prepared a report on urbanisation and climate change, which they submitted to the urban development ministry on Tuesday.

The report says climate change is likely to worsen hydro-meteorological risks for increasing numbers of people living in urban areas of the developing world.

India has three out of the 10 highest density cities of the world with two—Mumbai and Kolkata—occupying the first two places.
