Poland sacks environment minister

WARSAW: In a unique move of this kind, the Polish government on Wednesday sacked his environment minister Marcin Korolec — who currently heads the country's delegation at the climate talks.

Though Korolec will remain the country's representative at the talks, the move may question Polish commitment to the negotiations — specifically when the sacked environment minister had assumed the presidency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on inaugural day of the climate talks on November 11.

The country's prime minister Donald Tusk told reporters here that Korolec — who lost his job as Polish environment minister in government's reshuffle — will remain the Poland's point-person for the on-going climate negotiations.

Delegates from other countries appear to be quite puzzled over the move as they believe that the decision of the Polish government may weaken Korolec's leadership role while Warsaw is currently hosting the climate talks involving 195 countries.

Questioning the timing of the reshuffle, one of the delegate said the episode would surely raise a suspicion whether the country was really serious about the negotiations under the person who lost his authority within his government.

It is learnt that Korolac has to lose his job because he had been charged for hampering work on new shale gas projects.
