Discussion on careers in botany, biotechnology held

VARANASI: Career options in the field of botany and biotechnology were discussed at length with school students on the fourth day of the INSPIRE, the programme organised at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), on Tuesday.

Prof Madholika Agrawal, of department of Botany, BHU informed the students about global anthropogenic green house gas emission, climate change and the factors responsible for global warming, global actions, strategies and agreement to manage global warming. She also encouraged students to develop innovative thinking and to explore the unexplored areas of botany.

Meanwhile, students also interacted with Prof Ashok Kumar of department of biotechnology, BHU. He emphasised on different areas in which biotechnological tools were being used to fight hunger, malnutrition, provide better health care and heal the Earth. Later, students visited various laboratories of botany and zoology department. Students asked many questions about botanical and medicinal plants in botanical garden during the visit.

The five-day INSPIRE Internship programme will culminate on Wednesday. The programme is sponsored by department of Science and Technology (DST) of ministry of science and technology and aims at providing an insight to class X pass-outs regarding career options and researches going on in different areas of science.
