Actor Ranvir Singh visits city to promote Ram-Leela

Bollywood actor Ranvir Singh visited the Institute of Technology and Future Management Trends (ITFT) in Mullanpur to promote his upcoming movie Ram-Leela, a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production. The actor was accompanied by the cast and crew of the movie.

Singh also visited NEXGEN, the finishing school of the ITFT Educational Group and interacted with the faculty, staff and students.

Interacting with the students, Singh said the movie was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. "I enjoyed playing the character of Ram, which is similar to Romeo in the novel. I have grown tremendously as a person and as an actor during my journey from Bittu in Band Baaja Baraat to Ram in Ram-Leela," said the actor.

Third meeting of committee on Himalayan Glaciology at PEC University

The third meeting of the Programme Advisory Comittee on Himalayan Glaciology (PAC-HG) was held at PEC University of Technology in Sector 12 on Tuesday.

The meeting began with a brief overview of the institute by Director Dr Manoj Arora, while Dr Anil Kulkarni, a distinguished scientist from Divecha Center for Climate Change, Center for Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, IISC, Bangalore, chaired the meeting. The committee monitored completed and ongoing projects on Himalayan glaciers which included a project on Remote Sensing Based Debris Cover Analysis of Chhota Shigri glaciers, a project on Snow cover and Glacial Geomorphological Investigation of Ner-Nar Glacier, Sind Valley, Jammu and Kashmir, and a study of Glaciers in Himalaya using Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometery. The committee also discussed approved projects on Gangotri Glacier.

PU Senate member Dr R P S Josh honoured for contribution to his field of expertise

Dr R P S Josh, member of Panjab University (PU) Senate and Syndicate and Associate Professor in Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, has been honoured with 'Shiksha Bhushan Rashtira Samaan-2013' by the Rashtirya Sahitya Kala aur Sanskriti Parishad Haldighati (Rajasthan). Dr Josh was earlier honoured with 'Dr Baba Sahib Ambedkar Sahitya Rattan and Dr Baba Sahib Ambedkar Utkrisht Karya Seva Purskar' in the fifth Akhil Bhartiya Pratibha Samaan Puruskar Samaroh held in 2011 in Indore.

On World Stroke Day, neurologistsadvise quick action

On World Stroke Day, city based neurologists ask people to remember 'FAST'- basic warning signs of brain stroke and rush to a neurologist, in case one find any one of these signs. 'FAST' stands for face, arms, speech and time. Face of a person suffering from brain stroke will be drooped, one arm or leg will be numb and a person will not be able to speak a simple sentence and will have slurred speech. If one notices any such symptom, then without wasting any time, rush to a neurologist, advise doctors.

Societies' welfare panel writes to Ministry of Home Affairs for services

A group housing cooperative societies' welfare council has sent a representation to UT Joint Secretary I A Chahal, of Ministry of Home Affairs, for intervening and directing Chandigarh Administration to provide basic and estate services infrastructure to the societies, which are spread over Sectors 48, 49, 50 and 51. The internal work of the societies is to be undertaken by the residents.

The representation states a policy was finalised in 1994, under which it was contemplated that the Engineering department of Chandigarh Administration shall carry out internal development within the pieces of land allotted to the group housing cooperative societies in the city. Funds for the purpose at the rate of Rs 210 per square yard were to be be deposited with the Administration by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB). CHB had, instead of depositing the funds for carrying out internal development, inserted clauses that enjoined upon them to undertake the development and maintenance thereof.
