HYDERABAD: Three days of incessant rain triggered by the northeast monsoon has brought Hyderabad to a halt and exposed the government's poor contingency measures as waterclogged arterial routes threw traffic out of gear and turned commuting into a nightmare.

While perplexed weather experts said the latest nature's fury was probably an impact of a large climate change, people in m a n acity suffered as helpless denizens watched rain water gushing into their homes.

The GHMC's disaster management cell said they have been receiving endless calls for help from harried residents .

Four people, including three of a family died in accidents, triggered by rains. While three died in a wall collapse near Masab Tank, one person was electrocuted in the Old City. Separately , five people were injured in Vanasthalipuram and several cars were damaged as portion of a wall fell in a heap due to heavy rains.

Movement of vehicles was severely hit in about 100 rain-battered roads, where puddles of water made it impossible for motorists to negotiate. Fresh patchwork of gravel put on main thoroughfares , including Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills, came off in many places due to overnight rains.

"Roads are totally damaged at Sangeet junction due to metro rail works. The L&T metro rail dug up the road and did not restore it which resulted in heavy traffic jams on the stretch throughout the day on Thursday," Michael Raj, a businessman told TOI.

Several homes flooded, trees uprooted

Huge traffic snarls were reported till late evening from Jubilee Hills, Masab Tank, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, RTC Crossroads, Lakdi-ka-pul , Begumpet, etc. Trees got uprooted at Banjara Hills, Adikmet, Rajbhavan Road, New Nallakunta and SR Nagar, officials said.

With the Met department predicting heavy to very heavy rain at a few places over Telangana on Friday, things seem to be cut out for the government. Hyderabad witnessed intermittent drizzle throughout the day and recorded 2.8 mm rainfall on Thursday till 5.30 pm. The maximum temperature fell to 24.5 degree Celsius. "It will take another 48 hours for the rainfall to subside . The intensity of the rainfall increased over Telangana region on Thursday," said M Narasimha Rao, assistant meteorologist .

With the continuous rain, GHMC emergency cells were flooded with calls from various parts of the city either on waterlogging or flooding of houses. "We are trying to address all the calls," an official said.

Water entered into dozens of colonies in Dilsukhnagar area , homes in Gunti Jangaiah colony, Chilkalguda crossroads , Ranigunj, Begumpet, Masab Tank, Tolichowki junction , Model House, Basheerbagh , Indira Park and Nagole crosswords. A police control room in Nizam College and parts of the Basavatharakam cancer hospital at Banjara Hills were flooded .
