Global energy, climate dynamics, the state’s climate and more such topics were presented to students through a series of questions and answers at the Climate Change Educational Programme-2013.

The programme organised on Thursday by the Divecha Centre for Climate Change of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), attracted over 700 students from 133 colleges in and around Bangalore. The highlight of the event was the climate change quiz.

Divided into 10 rounds based on seasons, clouds, carbon dioxide, climate and global renewable energy scenario, the quiz had Aranya Khinvasara and Aniruddha Bharadhwaj from BMS Institute of Technology clinching the shield.

Starting from answering questions like why Bangalore is cooler than Chennai by five to six degrees, thrown at them by quizmaster Govindasamy Bala, the associate professor at Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, IISc, the team went on to answer more difficult questions.

J Srinivasan, professor and chairman of Divecha Centre for Climate Change, said, “Students do learn in classrooms but quiz is a more interesting way to learn things because they actually make a mistake while attempting to answer questions and then learn from it,” he said.

Aranya, a third year engineering student from the winning team, said participating in the quiz exposed him to a lot of statistics and facts. “We are heading towards a unsustainable way of life and the future could be harmful,” he said.
