The National Green Tribunal (NGT) today sought a response from Uttar Pradesh government on a plea alleging dumping of garbage and industrial wastes in a Greater Noida residential area in violation of green norms.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued notices to UP government, UP Pollution Control Board, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, the Department Of Urban Development and the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar, seeking their responses by October 4.
The order came on the plea of a society, Lokpriya Sehkari Avas Samity Ltd, which alleged municipal and industrial wastes are being dumped on their land in violation of the Environment Protection Act and the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules.
In its petition, the Society contended dumping of the wastes will lead to pollution of ground water, which in turn would impair and injure the life of several individuals living in and around the illegal dump site.
The Society said the dumping of wastes would lead to serious health, hygiene and environmental problems as it will cause air pollution as well as contamination of ground water.
