'Science Express' to arrive in City on August 12

‘Science Express’ which is covering 62 locations in the country, will chug into Thiruvananthapuram on August 12.

The train named ‘Science Express - Bio-diversity Special’ is a joint initiative of Department of Science and Technology and Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The train will have exhibits which aims to create awareness about the unique biodiversity of the country, climate change and is meant to be informative for students.

The train will have 16 air-conditioned coaches, of which eight will be exclusively devoted to displaying exhibits on the diverse biodiversity spread across the bio-geographical zones of India like the Himalayas, Gangetic Plain and Western Ghats etc.

One coach each will be dedicated to the subjects of ‘climate change’, ‘way towards safe, secure and sustainable environment’ and ‘energy conservation’. One coach called ‘Kids Zone’ will be devoted for children to take part in recreational activities, games and puzzles on science, mathematics and environment. There will also be a hands-on-lab arranged, ‘Joy of Science’, where students can get involved in experiments and related activities. For teachers, a discussion-cum-training centre will be arranged. The train was flagged off in Chennai in July and it will be in Thiruvananthapuram Central railway Station for three days from where it will move to Alappuzha, Coimbatore, Kozhikode and Kannur. It will be stationed for four days in each of these places. Entry to the exhibition is free.
