Celebrating his fiery orange hue and elegant black stripes, we must not forget to remember this magnificent being that calls our land home. This Global Tiger Day, touching upon the issue of poaching of tigers, a new campaign called “Leave Me Alone” is being launched by Sanctuary Asia magazine with support from NGOs and government organisations.

The campaign focuses on the animal’s requirement for space, isolation and protection from humans.

The Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) documented 923 tiger deaths in the country between 1994 and 2010. There were 1,411 Royal Bengal tigers in 2008 and the number rose to 1,700 in 2011 after security measures were taken to save the big cat. The campaign plans not just to create awareness of the issue but to push the government into action to save the tiger.

The forest department of Maharashtra has called for additional budget to increase the number of forest guards and vehicles in protected areas. They have also decided to regulate tourism and recruit forest dwellers to be the ones to guard these areas. They are also looking at providing village women with subsidized cooking gas so that they don’t have to go far into the forest to collect firewood.

To sign the petition and join the campaign log onto www.sanctuaryasia.com or follow them on twitter - #Leave MeAlone.

“Today people are realising the importance of saving the animal,” said Pravin Pardeshi, Principal Secretary of forests, Maharashtra.

July 29 is celebrated as Global Tiger Day.
