MPs’ forum on tiger meets minister

NEW DELHI, April 27. — A meeting of all field directors of tiger reserves and Chief Wildlife Wardens of states will be convened in early May to discuss the measures that need to be taken to enhance the management of tiger reserves in the light of the final results of the independent experts’ monitoring of the reserves.

The meeting will also chalk out the immediate steps necessary to address the problem of poaching during the monsoon, the implementation of enhanced methodology of tiger census, and other relevant issues, environment and forests minister Mr A Raja told a group of Parliamentarians, who have constituted the forum, Tiger And Wilderness Watch.

The members of the forum who met the minister included tourism minister Ms Renuka Chowdhury, Mr BJ Panda, Mr Suresh Prabhu, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mr Anand Sharma and Mr Manvendra Singh.

Stating that this interaction would provide strong support to the efforts of the ministry in precisely identifying and addressing the problems of management of tiger reserves and conservation of tigers in the country, Mr Raja apprised the members of the interim findings of a group of experts.

US help to study

tiger population

Concerned over the decreasing number of India’s wild tiger population, US lawmakers and funding agencies have decided to lauch a bipartisan effort to examine the reasons for the decline, reports PTI from Washington.

During a hearing yesterday on reauthorisation of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Democrat Congressman Mr Frank Pallone raised the issue of reports about potential corruption and scandal in global efforts to conserve tigers in India.
