Delhi Metro stations to harvest rainwater

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro is zipping along the green track. As trains connect more parts of east and south Delhi in phase II of the project, DMRC will recycle construction waste and even initiate rainwater harvesting at its stations.

During construction, recycling plants will be set up. Construction waste generated during building and digging will be segregated and sent to recycling plants. After recycling, either DMRC will use it for its own purpose or sell it to other agencies.

DMRC has not identified exact locations of these plants. It is likely that one section has a common recycling plant.

DMRC chief public relations officer, Anuj Dayal said: "During phase I of our project, we realised that we generate a lot of construction waste like plastic or steel or scrap. This is wasted. If we have recycling plants, these can be utilised again. Either DMRC uses them or we sell it."

Another green initiative in phase II would be towards rainwater harvesting. DMRC is planning to design station buildings that allow rainwater to be collected. The requisite design elements have been added to the roofs of stations.

DMRC officials felt that rainwater harvesting would also help preserve the water table around the corporation’s properties.

Due to its environmental initiatives, DMRC received ISO 14001 EMS (Environmental Management System) and OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) 18001 certification last year.

Metro has achieved targets like prevention of air pollution, excessive noise and vibration at construction sites, minimised waste generation, good waste management, efficient traffic management and extensive use of fly ash.

Dayal said: "The United States-Asia Environment Programme (US-AEP), the New York Mass Rapid Transit System and the Confederation of Indian Industry assisted DMRC in achieving ISO 14001 within 15 months."
