SURAT: Three locals were nabbed by fisherman and volunteers of a NGO while poaching in weir-cum-causeway here. The poachers were local slum dwellers and hence released after warning.

Three eggs were recovered from the poachers which they had taken from a nest on the vegetation in the weir-cum-causeway near Dabholi Bridge. A trap made of plastic thread was recovered from them. They had made the net to catch birds which came to eat insects on the riverbed or to roost.

The poachers kill the bird once it get caught in the net. "The poachers, who were nabbed on Monday, were doing it for their personal consumption. No bird was recovered from them. We only found eggs from them," said Darshan Desai of Prayas.

The poachers were handed over to forest officials. "We warned the three people and released them as no birds were found in their possession," said a forest official.

Earlier in February, four dead migratory birds were found in Tapi river near Dabholi. The birds were victims of poaching.
