World Environment Day observed in Tura

TURA, June 8 – Tura town woke to the sound of the Environment Day bugle here on Wednesday. The meeting was held in a mission mode, led by DC West Garo Hills Pravin Bakshi. The Day was a day to save the Earth from further degradation.

Milton Sangma, VC of ICFAI and Parliamentary Secretary and MLA from Salmanpara, Winnerson D Sangma attended the programme. A two day conclave on sustainable development was also held in the DRDA building here.

The DC eleborated on the various programmes being undertaken by the District Administration through DRDA and the impact it has had on getting people back on track. Bakshi also spoke about the impact the current deforestation was having on the environment.

The presentation was followed by another on the impact of jhumming and the imbalance the process was having on the local environment. The highlight of the presentation was the issue of population increase, monoculture of trees like rubber, cashew and betel nut.

The final presentation was given by the NERCOMP and MRDS team, who spoke on the climate change adaptation and green initiatives being taken up by them and the impact it will have in the long run.

The discussion that followed was on the District level strategy on environment protection, protection of catchment areas, water use and waste management. The team made about 40 suggestions on the best tactics to stop the degradation of the environment as well as the regrowing of forest cover. Suggestions varied from asking the Nokmas and the NGOs to take a more active role in spreading awareness.
