Jairam on UN secy-general’s climate panel

New Delhi: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has set up a high level panel on global sustainability headed by the presidents of Finland and South Africa and including Union environment and forests minister Jairam Ramesh.

The panel, meant to take up over-arching issues about global climate regime, will besides other issues recommend how to build low-carbon economies, what changes are required to the existing international institutions and financing mechanisms. It will also recommend to the UNSG how transparent data on climate change can be collected, compiled and assessed and disclosed by governments and private bodies.

The panel, which is to submit its report by December 2011, includes Kevin Rudd, former PM of Australia, Connie Hedergaard, EU commissioner for climate action, Susan E Rice, US permanent representative to the UN, and G H Brundtland, former chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development.

Priyanka named green ambassador

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has agreed to be the national green ambassador to initiate eco-friendly campaigns in India, environment and forests minister Jairam Ramesh announced on Monday. PTI
