Poachers nabbed with animal traps, antlers

In a major crackdown against poaching in the areas adjoining the Panna National Park, the Police and Forest Department arrested more than half a dozen persons and seized animal merchandise, traps, weapons and timber from the accused.The operation was localised in the South Panna and Chattarpur Forest Division. A joint team of police and forest officials led by the DFO and two Sub Divisional Officers, raided the houses of suspects on the basis of intelligence reports.
According to reports, the houses of Hakim Singh and Pir Khan at village Vikrampura were raided. The raids yielded an iron animal trap, two jaws of wild boar, body parts of an owl and black buck antlers. The team also found a muzzle loading weapon, two black buck antlers, one Sambar antlers and 35 metre of electric wire from Pir Khan's house. Hakim Singh has number of cases pending against him. Both accused have been booked under sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. The team also raided the house of Bade Raja at village Gadosar under the Amanganj range.
The joint operation involved more than 80 staff of the Forest Department who had come from adjoining districts. The raiding parties found Santosh, resident of Karri, in possession of 20 logs of teak and Parsu and Baldev in possession of four sets of antlers. Bareli residents Anil Singh and Pancham Singh were arrested with four sets of antlers and four logs of teak. Kishangarh residents Munna Pathan and Tanay Suvrati were found in possession of 14 logs of teak.
