Environmental issues discussed at PAU

The Centre for Communication and International Linkages (CCIL) of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) celebrated World Environment Day in association with the Institution of Engineers -India (IEI) on Thursday.

The theme of World Environment Day this year is “Think, Eat, Save-Reduce Your

Foot Print”.

Speaking on this occasion, chief guest SS Gosal, director of research, PAU, expressed concern over the environmental issues, such as abrupt climate change, global warming, deforestation, hazardous industrial waste, and air and water pollution.

He urged people from different walks of life to come forward and play a vital role in making the environment cleaner and greener.

In his presidential remarks, PPS Lubana, dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, emphasised on the blend of science and engineering subjects for the protection of environment.

“For the development of eco-friendly technologies, the ill-effects of climate change, global warming, and air, water and soil pollution, need to be studied in detail,” he said.

In his inaugural address, HS Sehgal, additional director of communication, said, “According to Food and Agriculture Organisation, about one-third of food is either wasted or lost. One out of seven people in the world go to bed hungry.”

In his welcome remarks, MN Sharma, chairman, IEI, Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre, said nearly 1.3 billion tonnes of food was wasted every year.

Advising participants to be cautious about food wastage, he called upon the experts to make reformed decisions to help save the environment.

Sheetal Chawla, assistant director (publications), coordinated the programme.
