World Environment Day celebrated across State

SILCHAR, June 6 – Students here were encouraged to plant more saplings and keep their surroundings clean by the officials of the Pollution Control Board, Assam.

In a joint initiative with Arjya Sanskriti Bodhini Samiti, Silchar, the Pollution Control Board, Assam organised an awareness meet for students of Tarapur Girls’ High School on the occasion of the World Environment Day on Wednesday.

Emphasising on this year’s theme, ‘Think, Eat and Save,’ speakers stressed the need to think judiciously before eating and help save the environment.

Karuna Thakuria, assistant environmental scientist, Pollution Control Board, Assam, Silchar unit, said, “We often ignore or overlook our own environment and fancy visiting other places expecting to enjoy a fresh environment. It is time we promised to keep our own environment clean.” He urged the students to realise the need of saving the environment by saying “If I don’t, who will protect my environment?” Besides the menace of deforestation, Thakuria expressed serious concern over the filth spread across the water intake points in the city.

Senior environment engineer Prabir Ranjan Shome said that industrial development must not harm the environment. Journalist Uttam Kumar Saha appealed to the students to say ‘no’ to plastic and polybags. Samsul Haque, principal of Tarapur Girls’ High School, underscored the importance of planting trees and maintaining a clean and green environment. Gautam Bhattacharjee, chief coordinator of Arjya Sanskriti Bodhini Samiti, Silchar gave the vote of thanks.

Earlier in the day, officials of the Pollution Control Board, Assam, members of Arjya Sanskriti Bodhini Samiti and students planted five saplings in the school campus.

Tinsukia Correspondent adds: The World Environment Day was celebrated by various schools and organisations in Tinsukia with different programmes. Some schoolchildren took out a procession in the town with banners and raised slogans for the safety and conservation of the environment. In some schools, plays carrying messages on environment conservation were staged. Schoolchildren were also taken to the New Tinsukia Railway Station to get knowledge about a scientific approach towards the conservation of biodiversity being exhibited at the Science Express Special stationed there.

Dergaon Correspondent adds: The 42nd World Environment Day was observed at Dergaon on June 5. The day was observed by Aashray, an organisation for environmental protection and against social abuses in association with the Aryabhatta Science Centre, Golaghat, North Block.

In the morning, the project taken up by Aashray to plant fruits trees on 400 bighas of land for monkeys at Missamarara Bartika area was initiated by the headmaster of Muhiram Hazarika High School, Lakhidhar Hazarika on the school premises. Eminent journalist Samudragupta Kashyap also took part in the programme.

An open meeting was later held at Dergaon Higher Secondary School.The meeting, chaired by the principal of the school GK Sarmah Baruah, was inaugurated by Dergaon Circle Officer Tapan Kumar Gohain and moderated by Sanjoy Hazarika, secretary of Aashray. The welcome address was delivered by Biren Saikia, Aashray president.

The key lecture on the topic, ‘Our food habits and environment conservation,’ in connection with the focal theme of this year’s World Environment Day, ‘Think, Eat, Save, Reduce Your Foodprint’ was delivered by eminent journalist of the Indian Express Group Samudragupta Kashyap.

The Commandant of the Battalion Training Centre, Dergaon, Satyaraj Hazarika ws the guest of honour. DFO, Social Forestry, Golaghat, Arup Kumar Das was the distinguished guest.

Bongaigaon Correspondent adds: School students participated in a debate organised on Wednesday by the Army at Dhaligaon High School in Chirang district. It was a part of the World Environment Day celebration. At Shankarghola in Bongaigaon district, the West Assam zone of Aranyak showed slides of butterflies and movies on wildlife in a programme organised to mark the World Environment Day. At Nigamghola, the Astha resort and Army jointly celebrated the day with the locals. Their main aim is to develop the area for ecotourism.

Haflong Correspondent adds: The World Environment Day was observed in Dima Hasao with the free distribution of saplings of various species of trees among the people of Dima Hasao on Wednesday.

At Haflong, the Dima Hasao Forest Department distributed free seedlings.

The DFO, Southern A Forestation Division, Borsing Bey ACF, Chunga Hmar, RO, Peter Sumer and other Forest staff planted seedlings on the premises of the Circuit House.

North Lakhimpur Correspondent adds: The World Environment Day was observed in North Lakhimpur with calls to minimise wastage in energy, food and aquatic resources. The day was centrally celebrated at the District Library by the Lakhimpur district administration in association with the District Disaster Management Authority with a symposium.

Inaugurating the symposium, the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur Gaurav Bothra spoke about this year’s World Environment Day motto, ‘Think, Eat and Save,’ stressing the importance of awareness on food shortage due to increased demands. He asked the public to create awareness for an environment-friendly mentality to reduce wastage of energy, food and aquatic resources for the future.

The Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur, PK Bhuyan attended the function as a guest of honour. The symposium was also attended by Dr Partha Jyoti Das and Dr Sapnalee Chetaia Gogoi as resource persons who spoke about the conservation of biodiversity and environment by identifying local causes of their degradation.

Earlier, school students took out awareness processions, carrying placards and banners, calling for the protection and conservation of environment and raising issues of global warming, climate change, carbon emission and loss of forestland. Various schools also organised competitions on environmental issues for students and conducted tree plantation programmes to mark the day in North Lakhimpur.
