Though climate change is a global issue, it has to be addressed locally as real change starts with local initiatives, said British Minister For Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles.

He was speaking at a roundtable on ‘Combating Climate Change through Community Initiatives’ here on Wednesday.

Representatives from Chengannoor, Wayanad, Chalakkudy, Budhanur, Puliyur, Vanmony, Mulakazha, Chennithala and Cheriyanadu local bodies were also present at the meeting.

“The UK Government is keen in involving with combating climate change initiatives in the state to deliver sustainable development model,” Eric Pickles said.

Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner, said energy, climate change and growth are intricately linked and should be given equal priority.

“The UK Government is working closely at Central, state and regional levels with elected representatives through various programmes. For instance, in Madurai, support is being offered through partners to develop low-carbon tools in the Indian context and to prepare a planning and design sourcebook showcasing lessons learned and guidance for general application. We had a discussion regarding its use in Aluva,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Latha Anantha, Director, River Research Centre, said village-level water management committees had been formed in Mala, Kadukutty, Pariyaram, Mattathur, Meloor and Koratty panchayats.

P C Vishnunath MLA explained how Kuttemperoor river in Budhanur panchayat was regenerated with the help of local people.

A M Arif MLA sought the support of the UK Government to rescue water bodies in Aroor.
