Poison fells fourth tiger in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Forest department sleuths have stumbled upon a fourth tiger which has been poisoned to death in the state in the last four months. The latest case was reported on May 25 from Titimathi forest of Virajpet Territorial DiŽvision.

In the latest case, sleuths from the Forest Mobile Squad (FMS) of Madikeri were investigating the recovery of a tiger skin in Titimathi. The tiger appeared to have been killed and skinned in the same area as some parts of the tiger were found in a small pond nearby.

The Forest Mobile Squad sleuths were investigating a suspected tiger poaching case when they came upon the latest incident. Early this year, two tigers were found dead in the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve and another tiger carcass was recovered from Pandavpura area. They had all been poisoned proved postmortem reports.

On Wednesday, the sleuths heard that a tribesŽman was trying to sell tiger parts. The FMS caught the accused, Meese Sannappa (60), near Uma Maheshwari Petrol Bunk in Gonikoppa. He was handed over to Ponnampet police.

Police and mobile squad teams took Sannappa to the hunting site where he dug up several tiger articles and body parts. He also had nails and whiskers in his possession when arrested. A bag of tiger bones and nails were seized from his house.
