With climate change affecting lives around the world, a documentary feature film about the island nation of Maldives and its efforts to combat climate change will be released later this year.

The Island President is a 90-minute documentary film which highlights the Maldives' efforts to combat climate change and rising sea levels.

The film, made by Oscar and Emmy-award winning San Francisco-based American documentary film company Actual Films, will premiere at an internatio-nal film festival later in the year.

Actual Films had contacted the Maldives Government in early 2009 asking for permission to film President Nasheed, members of the government and others as they prepared for the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change summit.

The film includes unseen footage of the Maldives Government's preparations for the climate change summit held in Copenhagen in 2009 and also behind-the-scenes footage shots taken during the summit.

Actual Films had full editorial control over the film, which was paid for entirely through grants from the Ford Foundation, the American Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the MacArthur Foundation, the Atlantic Foundation, the Sundance Institute, and small donations from American “well wishers”.

The Island President took over two years and $1.5 million to make and is due to be aired in the Maldives early next year.
