SURAT: In a new beginning, Surat will soon have 10 automated weather stations along with instruments to monitor pollution levels online. The initiative has been taken by Surat Climate Change Trust (SCCT) formed by the local civic body.

The weather stations and pollution monitoring instruments will be set up along with the closed circuit television cameras installed by the Traffic Education Trust to manage the vehicular traffic flow. The instruments will be linked to the same network. While the weather stations will provide information on temperatures, humidity, radiation etc., the pollution monitors will tell the kind of pollutants present in a specific area.

Kamlesh Yagnik, secretary of SCCT told TOI, "The idea is to measure suspended particulate matter (SPM), sulphur and nitrogen related pollutants along with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a particular area. Remedies to deal with the pollution could be suggested once we know of the contents and types of pollutants."

SCCT feels that this will help in working towards better solutions for urban health. "At present, we are in the process of working out the cost of the project," said Yagnik.

"As the city grows, its needs for good urban health and environment also grows. We need to innovate and take steps to make the city more resilient to new challenges," said Jatin Shah, city engineer of Surat Municipal Corporation and chairman of SCCT. Rockefeller Foundation of United States of America is likely to aid this project.

Surat is one of the 10 cities under Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) and it received an aid of Rs 2 crore from Rockefeller Foundation for forming SCCT last year.
