Kochi on grand stage

Kochi: With climate change becoming a reality for the authorities to tackle, the city corporation is taking up the issue with due seriousness and debating Kochi's resilience and mitigation strategies.

Mayor Tony Chammany will head for Bonn, Germany on Wednesday to attend an international conference on climate change. He is the only city mayor from the country invited to present a paper on ‘Working towards climate resilience in Kochi – initiatives and learning’ in the meet. Participation in the meet should help Kochi lobby to get funds for climate change mitigation strategy programmes.

The conference named ‘Global forum on urban resilience and adaptation’ from May 31 to June 2 is being organised by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEL), a global body for implementing a project called ‘Asian Cities Adapt – Impacts of Climate Change in Target Cities in India and the Philippines and Local Adaptation Strategies’, to look at ways to reduce the risks of climate change.

“Participating in the international conference will definitely help the civic body to identify funding sources for implementing climate change mitigation strategies. As IIT Roorkie is conducting a fact-finding study on the vulnerability of the fragile urban system of Kochi, the civic body has to identify funding sources for implementing the recommendations of their study,” said Dr. Rajan Chedambath, director of Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-HeD).
