Kochi: The city should be declared the ‘fisheries valley of the country’ said Council of Scientific and Industrial Research scientist V. Prakash who is also a Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar award winner.
He was delivering the golden jubilee lecture of the Society of Fisheries Technologists India here on Tuesday. “Technologies developed in the research institutes in and around Kochi should aid in achieving the ‘fisheries valley’ status for the city,” he said.
There was need for integrated research on climate change and its impact on fish wealth, Prakash added.
An international symposium on ‘Greening fisheries – towards green technologies’ was also organised where former deputy director-general of ICAR K. Gopakumar pointed to fisheries technologies and fisheries science emerging as a major science discipline. CIFT director T.K. Srinivasa Gopal presided over the function.
Varsity draws major research plan
The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies is to chart out a massive research policy with focus on aquatic ecosystem, taxonomy, marine aquaculture, inland and marine capture fisheries, post harvest and value addition besides ornamental fish development.
As part of its foundation day on Monday, the university held a series of discussions on a variety of subjects as part of chartering its research policy where experts presented papers to identify the key research areas.
Union minister K.V. Thomas who inaugurated the programme said that the Centre would provide all technical assistance for initiatives in the food nutrition sector. Fisheries minister K. Babu who presidend over the function said that initiatives to form the senate council were in the final stages and the report had been sent to the Governor. He also released the varsity's masterplan.
Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture scientist in-charge Sridhar delivered the foundation day Lecture.
