A combing operation has been started by the officials of Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) to prevent entry of tribals for Akhand Sikar (ceremonial mass hunting) ahead of ‘Bisuva Sankranti’.
Combing operation is being carried out in Gudgudia, Dudhiani, Thakurmunda, Kaptipada, Kendumundi, Dukura, Pithabata, Jenabil, STR (core area) and Upper Barhakamuda.
Distributed in separate groups, nearly 300 forest officials including Similipal tiger protection assistants, Sabuja Bahini, special force along with rangers and Assistance Conservator of Forest (ACF) are carrying out raids at vulnerable pockets in STR and other forest ranges of Mayurbhanj district.
Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) Anup Kumar Nayak said three days prior to Pana Sankranti was very important as far as Akhand Sikar was concerned.
Forest officials have also appealed to the dehuris (priests) not to encourage the tribals for hunting.
Sources said the special anti-poaching drive was also carried out in Baripada, Karanjia, Rairangpur and STR forest divisions. Honourary wildlife wardens and 19 range officers supervised the operation.
