PANAJI: With the monsoon season likely to commence in just over a month, animal lovers launched a campaign in Margao to create awareness about the killing of frogs and the need to protect them.

The placards displayed by the activists read: Dear consumer, say no to frog meat, say yes to environment and Catching, selling and killing of frogs banned. The demonstration was held under the banner of GOACAN, a consumer action network, on the footpath in the heart of the city.

As pedestrians and motorists passed by in the busy commercial capital of Goa, the activists distributed leaflets to them to create awareness about the illegal catching and killing of the amphibians to cater to customers in restaurants or for others clandestinely.

The frogs emerge after the first heavy showers and poachers catch them, armed with torches and bags at night. Frog meat is sold as 'jumping chicken' in restaurants illegally.

But widespread action by the forest department and volunteers has led to the arrest of several poachers and awareness about the issue and consequent deterrence to venture out in the fields for hunting frogs.
