Karimadom residents to get CFLs free of cost

The New Indian Express , Tuesday, May 07, 2013
Correspondent :
Houses in five low-income housing colonies in the city will be provided with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) free of cost, as a follow-up action to Earth Hour 2013. Two CFLs each will be distributed to 2,500 houses in these colonies. The launch of the same will be held at Karimadom Colony on Tuesday at 5 pm and will be inaugurated by Aryadan Mohammed, Minister for Power and Transport.

This is with the objective of achieving energy conservation and money saving along with mitigating global warming and climate change, according to a release issued by WWF-India. The project is a joint initiative of WWF, Energy Management Centre, Kerala State Electricity Board and Department of Environment and Climate Change.

“The idea is to replace incandescent lamps with CFLs in these colonies,” said A K Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF-India. “CFLs consume only a fraction of the energy that an incandescent bulb does.”

The five colonies where the lamps are to be distributed are Karimadom, Thekkummoodu, Pulthottam, Singarathoppu and Kannammoola, he said.

M Sivasankar IAS, Chairman, KSEB; G Vijayaraghavan, State Planning Board Member; K Dhareshan Unnithan, Director, Energy Management Centre; and A M Sheela of Department of Environment and Climate Change will be attending the inaugural function.
