Hark! Take a look around

RV Institute of Management (RVIM) observed ‘Word Earth Day’ by organising a short-film screening along with a briefing on one’s responsibility towards the environment, at their campus recently.

The short film was based on climate change and energy conservation. Student volunteers talked about the importance of the day, and the changing patterns seen in the environment around us.

Kavya Sridhara, a second-semester student, who briefed the audience says, “We talked to the audience about the importance of the day, and the efforts we should take to work towards a better world. A documentary on the earth and how it’s being affected by global warming, climatic changes and such factors were screened.”

Kavya says that she and the other volunteers tried to communicate to the audience that it was important to change one’s ways and put in some extra effort for the same. She adds, “It’s small things like excessive usage of plastic bags and closing the tap a bit tighter that go a long way.”

Knowing that there is no point just holding a talk about the earth and showing a documentary, the students also tried to get the audience involved by getting them to express their thoughts on paper.

Neha Sthawarmath, another student volunteer, comments, “We passed out sheets for the students to write their comments on. While some talked about their thoughts elaborately, others summed up in quick liners like ‘Save earth, save yourself’ and so on.”

Even though the event was brief, it left an impact on the audience. Hironmoyi Saikia, a second-semester student, feels that all of us are too caught up in our schedules to think about the earth and our surroundings.

“We don’t stop for a moment to think about the different ways through which we leave an impact. And it’s high time we do something about the same. The change has to start from us,” she opines.

As a part of the ‘Earth Day’ celebrations, RVIM is also hosting a photography competition on topics ‘Environment Protection and Climate Mitigation’, ‘Civic Issues and Sanitation’, ‘Rural Health Care and Hygiene’, ‘Mass Education’, ‘Child Nutrition’, ‘Public Transport’, ‘Automobile Pollution’ and ‘Energy Conservation’. This competition is open for all.

Entries should be sent on or before April 30, by e mail to csr_rvim@yahoo.in. For details, call 42540300.
